Japanese lacquering technique is extremely durable and very different from the widely available japanning finish.   The process is painstakingly long.  The rich and elegant surfaces are the result of ten layers; hemp cloth is first applied, three layers of undercoating with clay and lacquer, another three layers of coloured lacquer and final three layers of clear lacquer.  Each process must be followed by buffing up with polishing charcoal.  Our craftsman is the tenth generation in the lacquer business and a producer of traditional lacquered furniture in Kyoto.
